In my over 20 years at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), I have witnessed countless changes, but never have I felt such deep anguish for our community as I do now.

The recent layoffs at OHSU have sent ripples of uncertainty and pain throughout our institution, affecting not just those who have received notices but also those who remain.

In this article I discuss navigating the emotional toll of OHSU layoffs.

The Hidden Impact: Survivor's Remorse

For those of us who still hold our positions, the phenomenon of survivor's remorse is a harsh reality. Watching our colleagues, friends, and mentors face unexpected layoffs can leave us grappling with guilt and anxiety.

It's natural to question why we were spared and to feel a sense of helplessness as we see others struggle. This emotional burden can be heavy, affecting our mental health and productivity.

Just last week, I sat in a park as the news rolled in, and I couldn't help but feel guilty—as if I could have done more to prevent these layoffs. I have spent 20 years supporting this community, and I couldn't shake the feeling that I should have done more. Even though I understand that much of this is beyond any individual's control, the weight of it felt personal.

Offering a Helping Hand

I want to extend a heartfelt message to every OHSU employee who has received a layoff notice: you are not alone. I am here to support you in any way I can. Over the years, I have built a robust network of professionals across various fields, and I am more than willing to leverage these connections to help you secure new opportunities.

A Community United

The strength of the OHSU community has always been our resilience and compassion.

Now, more than ever, we need to lean on each other.

For those of us who remain, let’s be vigilant in supporting our colleagues who are transitioning out. Simple gestures of kindness, sharing job leads, and offering emotional support can make a significant difference.

It's natural to question why we were spared and to feel a sense of helplessness as we see others struggle.

To all my fellow OHSU colleagues, past and present, remember that we are a community built on empathy and collaboration. Let’s uphold these values as we move forward, ensuring that no one faces this difficult period alone.

Stay strong, stay connected, and let’s support each other through this challenging time.

With deep empathy and solidarity,

Gabriel Flores
